But even this was a great luxury for the child - from an early age he had to work along with adults. If a free minute was issued, he rushed to his favorite lake, where he listened to the singing of birds, inhaled fresh air and fish. Vasil was especially remembered for the night fishing of crayfish, which he will then write about in his autobiographical work. To lure the prey, the boys set fire to the torches, after which the crayfish began to crawl on land.

His first book was a fairy tale about the Frog Princess, which the teacher gave the boy. In addition, Vasil was fond of drawing: he surprisingly accurately transferred to the paper what he saw around, or pictures from his imagination.

Bykov could well become a famous artist, and today they would talk about him as a Vrubel or Levitan. However, fate had their own plans for a talented young man. It was preserved that Vasil studied in several schools: first in his native village, then in the courtyard, and then in the Kulibichi. Having received a school certificate, the guy went to study at the sculptor, entering the Vitebsk art school.

It so happened that the scholarships were canceled in this educational institution, and Bykov had to leave his studies - it was necessary to earn a living. The author of the Alpine Ballad spent the first battles with the rank of junior lieutenant. In the fields of the fighting behind Bykov, the reputation of a brave, courageous fighter was fixed. He bravely fought for the freedom of Krivoy Rog, Znamenka and Alexandria.
